Feature: Go Places with Megumi Acorda’s Lovingly Crafted “Unexpectedly” EP

You might recognize Megumi Acorda from her role as keyboardist/vocalist in Manila-based dream pop band the Strange Creatures. On her debut solo EP, Unexpectedly, she borrows similar elements and takes them several steps further.

Released March last year, Unexpectedly is an underrated classic deserving of more attention. At the heart of the release is beautiful songwriting. Every lyric and note across the four tracks holds a special allure—combine that with the heartfelt singing, plus thoughtful arrangement from the other musicians (Jerros Dolino, Bijan Gorospe, Kevin Ingco, Evee Simon), and you’ve got what could be one of the best local releases in the genre.

The proper way to understand how amazing the music is would be to check it out. Listen below:

The studio versions are great, but prepare to be blown away by the live performances. Catching these songs at a gig brings about a different kind of experience, so make sure you’re present at Acorda’s next event. She usually brings physical copies—don’t forget to grab one.

Add this to your playlists and tell all your friends. Mesmerization awaits.
