The Spindle Jam: Featured Brand New Records – January 20, 2020

There’s a lot of good music out there, but you’ll never know which ones they are until you listen.

Today, we feature three sealed records you might have seen in our physical branch, but never cared to pick up. We made things easier and wrote up blurbs for each of these, complete with streaming links.

Bat for Lashes – Lost Girls

If you missed out on our previous Bat for Lashes LPs (particularly Two Suns, which apparently now fetches for insane prices), you’ve got another chance with the multi-instrumentalist/singer-songwriter’s latest offering, Lost Girls.

This 2019 release takes the familiar synth and reverb elements from the first four albums, but this time takes those through fresh territory, particularly one of a stronger 1980s influence.

From the way the hooks are executed to the catchy musical arrangements, there’s without a doubt Bananarama and Cyndi Lauper vibes on this record—and we’re not complaining. It’s a much-welcomed progression, keeping the musician’s output interesting. Think late teenage nights surrounded by trees and neon lights, hanging with outcast kids and falling deep in love.

Parachute – Parachute

This new record from the Virginia-based pop rock band might have a modern production feel to it, but don’t be fooled—this is still the band you grew up with.

Nostalgia fills the record, bringing to mind early 2000s pop acts like Jesse McCartney and Julio Iglesias. Memories are sure to come rushing back, what with lyrical elements like failed relationships and newfound hope.

The progression to this new LP feels like what Boys Like Girls did going to their third record, Crazy World—it was no longer the debut sound, but it was still them.

Overall, Parachute’s self-titled takes what longtime fans have loved and brings that to a new generation of audiences. This album will make you want to take a train at sundown, and then hang out at the beach come daybreak.

Clairo – diary 001

Listening to Clairo is like bubblegum for your soul. Aside from influences of bedroom pop, R&B, and soul, there’s also hip hop on the record.

Hailing from Georgia, the musician exhibits charming simplicity in both her music and lyrics. There’s sincerity here, and that shines through even more on vinyl.

If you missed her performance at 2019’s Wanderland festival, you can still cop a record and get a pretty close experience. Hurry, though—it’s getting tougher to find this EP at a good price. Good thing we still have it.

These records can be purchased from our SM Megamall store and on our website. Happy digging!
